MidAm 2011

Green Initiatives

The horticulture industry is the original green industry, helping homeowners and consumers tap into their “green conscience” by providing sustainable solutions for their home and business environments. The Mid-Am Trade Show is furthering those sustainable initiatives and doing our part to reduce, reuse and recycle. Here are just a few things Mid-Am and its partners, GES Exposition Services and McCormick Place Convention Center, are doing to help provide a green environment now and in the future.

  • The Sustainability Zone on the show floor highlights sustainable solutions and ideas for green industry businesses to offer their customers
  • Direct mail and some on-site materials are printed on recycled paper with soy inks
  • Communications are conducted electronically when ever possible, including through the website and in emails
  • Donating plant and landscape materials after the show to local organizations and worthy causes
  • Recycling Mid-Am badge holders at the end of the show
  • McCormick Place West attained LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council
  • Working together with McCormick Place to recycle materials, including paper and plastic, during the show
  • Styrofoam or polystyrene plastic products will not be used for serving in catering and concessions operations
  • Biodegradable flatware, straws, serving dishes, and cups are now used in the food courts
  • McCormick Place purchases 10% of annual electricity needs from renewable sources to lower reliance on non-renewable, pollution-producing fossil fuels
  • 100% recycled paper products in facility restrooms
  • Water stations in public areas to limit the use of bottled water
  • The use of Green Seal cleaning products
  • Propane fork lifts that will reduce emissions
  • 100% recyclable carpet
  • 100% recyclable carpet padding made with 98% pre- and post-consumer content
  • Biodegradable trash bags and wastebaskets make from 100% recycled materials
  • Utilizing energy efficient lighting
  • Recycling paper and ink cartridges from printers
  • Purchasing recycled paper and signage products
  • Recycling steel and aluminum exhibit structures
  • Retreading tires on trucks
