Morton Virginia Sweetspire – Scarlet Beauty™
Chicagoland Grows, Inc.
Booth #1911
Itea virginica 'Morton'

Virginia sweetspire is an attractive shrub native to the southeastern United States, including southern Illinois. It is cultivated for its summer bloom, its beautiful red fall foliage, and its shade and moist soil adaptability. The flowers are also attractive to butterflies. Itea virginica ‘Morton’ was selected in 1999 by Kris Bachtell of The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, Illinois from a plant that has been in the Arboretum’s collection since the late 1950s. It has exhibited superior tolerance to alkaline soil, giving the plant deeper green foliage than any other sweetspire on the market when grown in the alkaline soils prevalent to much of the Midwest. Hardiness has been proven to -25 °F in a laboratory situation; therefore, it can be grown
safely in USDA Zones 4, unlike most other sweetspire selections, which are hardy to USDA Zones 5 or 6. Partial winter tip dieback is the extent of winter injury observed over a lengthy trail period at Chicago Botanic Garden. Itea virginica ‘Morton’ is a beautiful selection that is 3 to 4’ tall and 3 to 4’ wide, slowly spreading wider over time by suckers. The white flowers are densely borne on droopy, 3” long inflorescences that are produced from mid-June to early July, when few other shrubs are in bloom. The flowers have a faint but pleasing fragrance. The deep orange-red fall foliage peaks in early November and lasts through a very hard frost. For moist sites in sun to shade. Easy to propagate from cuttings or division. USDA Zones 4-9. A 2011 introduction.

Veronica 'Whitewater' PPAF

Discovered by John Wachter at Elite Growers, Inc., Ingleside, Illinois, this selection appeared as a white-flowered branch sport in a batch of propagations of Veronica ‘Waterperry Blue’. The flower color has been stable through repeated propagation cycles and three years of in-ground trials. Otherwise, this selection is identical to Veronica ‘Waterperry Blue’. In trials at Chicago Botanic Garden, the plant was in bloom from late April to late June, with a peak bloom of its 1/2“ wide glistening white flowers in mid-May. A few flowers may appear sporadically throughout the remainder of summer and autumn. Veronica ‘Whitewater’ forms a dense low carpet, growing 4” to 6” tall and spreading 12” to 18” wide in a single season. Over time, it can cover a more expansive area. The plant is dense enough to suppress weeds, and tough
enough to tolerate some foot traffic. The ½” glossy dark green leaves are produced on creeping wiry stems. The foliage turns an attractive burgundy to bronze in winter months; it is evergreen in mild climates. An excellent groundcover plant, useful in the rock garden, along path and border edges, cascading over stone walls or among boulders, between pavers, and in the alpine garden. Use it as a “living mulch” under taller, airy shrubs or perennials that allow light though to their bases, or among bulbs such as lilies. Deer and rabbit resistant. Full sun to partial shade on a medium to dry soil is recommended. Easy to propagate from cuttings or division. Hardy to USDA Zones 4 to 7. A 2011 co-introduction between Elite Growers and Chicagoland Grows.

Aquascape, Inc.
Booth # 900/902
Aquascape, Inc.’s new Waterfall Spillway is an inexpensive solution for creating waterfalls! This compact, yet extremely strong spillway includes strategically positioned internal barriers that diffuse the rush of incoming water, providing a smooth flowing waterfall through the front spillway. The Waterfall Spillway is an ideal solution for starting waterfalls on Pondless® Waterfalls systems, where larger, more expensive biological filters aren’t necessary due to the absence of fish. The Spillway is also an excellent choice for designing additional waterfalls and streams onto ponds that already have a biological filter. You can even use multiple Waterfall Spillways to design larger, more creative water fall configurations. You may find that your imagination may be the only limitation with this new product.
