New Day for 2010 Mid-Am Student Career Center December 3 , 2009 |
WAUCONDA, IL- The relationship-building Student Career Center at the 2010 Mid-America Horticultural Trade Show (Mid-Am) will be held on a new day than at past events. The 2010 Student Career Center is scheduled for Friday, January 22 at McCormick Place West in Chicago, Illinois. The popular event traditionally was held on Thursday during Mid-Am week. The Student Career Center attracts more than 600 horticulture students from throughout the Midwest who meet with prospective industry employers to ask questions, learn more about their companies, and make important connections. Both employers and students benefit by getting to know each other in an informal atmosphere.
Invitations have been distributed to more than 250 colleges, universities, and trade/technical schools that have horticultural education programs. Full-time students enrolled in valid horticulture programs who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in the industry, including high school seniors, are eligible to attend. Representatives from industry companies will be conducting preliminary interviews for internships, summer jobs, and full-time positions. Students interested in attending the Mid-Am Student Career Center should contact their horticulture instructor to register. To help spread the word about the Student Career Center among horticulture instructors and students and to facilitate event registration, Mid-Am has created a page on the popular social networking website Facebook. There is no cost for instructors and their students to attend the 2010 Student Career Center. Information on how to register was sent to instructors; students are encouraged to contact their horticulture instructor to register for the event. Students are also invited to attend the trade show for a reduced registration fee of $10 per student and must register on site. Horticulture instructors who have not received information from Mid-Am and wish to bring their students to the Career Center on Friday, January 22 are encouraged to contact Mid-Am at mail@midam.org or call 800.223.8761.
Information on hosting a table at the 2010 Student Career Center is being sent to previous participating companies and others in the industry. Due to space constraints, companies are encouraged to reserve space early; the deadline for reserving a table at the Mid-Am Student Career Center is December 21, 2009. The Mid-Am Horticultural Trade Show features hundreds of exhibits from green industry companies, educational opportunities including the Pre-Conference Workshops, Midwinter Conference, Mentoring Roundtable, and the newly added free IGIA Irrigation Education; networking events including the free Mid-Am Mixer and Reception on Thursday, January 21; show elements such as the Sustainability Zone—a special area on the show floor that combines plants, products, information, and free education focusing on sustainable solutions for industry buyers and businesses; and much more to provide a well-rounded industry experience. The show takes place Wednesday, January 20 through Friday, January 22, 2010 at McCormick Place West Convention Center in Chicago, Illinois.
The Mid-America Horticultural Trade Show is sponsored by the Illinois Green Industry Association (IGIA), the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association (ILCA), and the Wisconsin Green Industry Federation (WGIF). Mid-Am is governed by a Board of Directors, which directs the show, its programs and activities. Mid-Am was developed by green industry professionals, for green industry professionals. Unlike for-profit trade shows, proceeds from the show go back to IGIA, ILCA, and WGIF to support a sustainable green industry.
